Two National Guardsmen Remain in Critical Condition After Shooting Near White House

November 26, 2025 · By sheploocloud@gmail.com · In U.S. News

FBI Director Kash Patel said two West Virginia National Guard members wounded in a shooting near the White House on Wednesday remain in critical condition, correcting an earlier report from Gov. Patrick Morrisey, who mistakenly announced their deaths. Federal and local officials said the situation is still developing as the service members receive emergency medical care.

The shooting drew immediate national attention due to its proximity to the White House and the involvement of uniformed personnel on active patrol. Authorities emphasized that no civilians were injured during the incident.

Police Say Attack Was Targeted and Unprovoked

Jeffery Carroll, executive assistant chief of specialized operations for the Metropolitan Police Department, said during a news conference that the attack was intentional. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser also confirmed the shooter “immediately” opened fire on the Guardsmen without warning.

The service members were conducting high-visibility patrols near 17th and H Street NW when the suspect turned a corner, raised a firearm, and opened fire, according to Carroll. Officials have not announced a possible motive.

Suspect Shot and Detained After Guardsmen Returned Fire

Other National Guard members stationed nearby heard the gunfire and responded quickly, subduing the shooter and taking him into custody. Authorities say the suspect was also shot during the confrontation and transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The alleged gunman has not yet been publicly identified, and investigators have not confirmed whether he acted alone. Federal and local agencies are coordinating the investigation.

Officials Continue Monitoring as Investigation Unfolds

Patel said the FBI is working closely with D.C. authorities to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Officials have not released additional updates on the Guardsmen’s condition but stressed that their injuries remain life-threatening.

More information is expected as investigators review surveillance footage and interview witnesses in the area.
