Liverpool Suffer Another Heavy Home Defeat in 4-1 Loss to PSV Eindhoven
iverpool’s struggles continued at Anfield on Wednesday as they fell 4-1 to PSV Eindhoven in Champions League Group Stage action. The defeat marks the Reds’ third consecutive loss in all competitions and their second straight at home.
PSV’s goals came from Ivan Perišić, Guus Til, and a brace from Soufiane Shuaib, while Dominik Szoboszlai scored Liverpool’s only response in the first half.
Historic Defensive Collapse Adds to Liverpool’s Alarming Form
The 4-1 defeat continues a worrying defensive trend for Liverpool, who have now conceded three or more goals in three consecutive matches for the first time since September 1992.
Across 20 matches this season, Liverpool have won 10, drawn once, and lost nine — matching their total number of defeats from the entirety of last season. In their last 12 games across all competitions, the team has lost nine and won only three.
The result also extends coach Arne Slot’s struggles against PSV, who have now beaten him five times.
PSV Take Control After Second-Half Surge
The match opened with early drama as PSV were awarded a penalty just four minutes in after the ball struck Virgil van Dijk’s arm. Despite protests, Perišić converted from the spot in the sixth minute to give the visitors the lead.
Szoboszlai equalized in the 16th minute, finishing a rebound after the goalkeeper parried an initial effort. PSV had a goal ruled out for offside moments later, and the first half ended level.
PSV regained control in the 56th minute when Mauro Júnior dribbled past Salah and sent a low cross for Til to finish with a one-touch strike. Soufiane Shuaib added a third in the 73rd minute, reacting quickest to a rebound off the post.
In stoppage time, the Moroccan forward sealed his brace with a low finish from a Sergiño Dest cut-back, securing a dominant away victory.
Liverpool Drop Further Down the Table as PSV Climb
The defeat leaves Liverpool stuck on 9 points, sliding to 13th in the group standings, while PSV move up to 15th with 8 points.
Arne Slot made multiple changes ahead of kickoff, returning Giorgi Mamardashvili and Hugo Ekitike to the starting XI in place of Alisson Becker and Alexander Isak. Mohamed Salah started up front but could not influence the result.
