📰 Students Locked Down in Dorms Express Shock and Fear After Brown University Shooting

Providence, R.I. — As law enforcement continued searching for a gunman following Saturday’s deadly shooting at Brown University, students across campus described a night filled with fear, confusion, and heartbreak.

Brown sophomore Satvik Paduri, 19, said he considers himself one of the fortunate ones. He was inside his dorm when alerts warned students to shelter in place, but many of his friends were still locked down in libraries or crowded into other dorm rooms.

“I definitely don’t feel comfortable going out of my dorm room just because they haven’t found the shooter,” Paduri said. “Obviously, he could be anywhere.”

Paduri said all of his friends are safe, though there was a tense moment when one friend appeared online as still being inside the engineering building where the shooting occurred.

“It turns out he was able to get out but just left his phone behind in the panic,” Paduri explained. “It’s just horrifying that something like this has occurred so close to home.”

Another sophomore, Atman Shah, 19, said he and a friend were about a block away from the campus when they noticed a sudden rush of emergency vehicles.

“You saw police cars with lights and sirens going like 60 mph down a residential road,” Shah said. “That’s when we knew something serious was happening.”

Shah and several friends crowded into a dorm room that normally houses fewer students, preparing to spend the night sheltering in place after the university issued emergency alerts.

“It’s been a pretty shocking day,” said Shah, who is from California. “As of right now, it seems like we’re spending the night in this room.”

Both Paduri and Shah said they feel grateful they and their friends were not harmed, while keeping their thoughts with the victims and their families.

Though both students said they’ve had indirect experiences with gun violence in public places before, this incident felt different.

“But this hits a lot closer to home,” Paduri said. “It’s shocking.”
