Providence, R.I. — Brown University President Christina H. Paxson described today’s mass shooting as a “deeply tragic day” for the university and the surrounding community, following an attack that left two people dead and others wounded, according to university officials.
In a statement released after the shooting at the Barus & Holley engineering and physics building, Paxson wrote:
“There are truly no words that can express the deep sorrow we are feeling.”
She urged students, faculty, and staff to reach out to their loved ones to let them know they are safe, acknowledging the fear and concern spreading beyond campus.
“They are worried about you,” Paxson added.

Paxson confirmed that the suspect remains at large, describing him as a male dressed in black, and urged the university community to continue taking all safety precautions as law enforcement maintains an active search.
She also thanked local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies for their rapid response to the incident.
“This is a day we hoped would never come to our community,” she wrote.
