Chiefs’ Season Ends in Painful Loss to Chargers as Mahomes Suffers Knee Injury
The Kansas City Chiefs’ season came to a crushing end Sunday night, undone by another costly red-zone interception and compounded by a worrying knee injury to quarterback Patrick Mahomes, as Kansas City fell 16–13 to the Los Angeles Chargers at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
With the Chiefs trailing by three points and already in field-goal range midway through the fourth quarter, Mahomes attempted a risky throw on third-and-12 from the Chargers’ 17-yard line. Looking for the go-ahead touchdown, he lofted a jump ball toward Kareem Hunt on a wheel route.
Instead, Chargers linebacker Daiyan Henley intercepted the pass at the 1-yard line — Mahomes’ 11th interception of the season and one that effectively sealed Kansas City’s fate.
Moments later, Mahomes exited the game after suffering a left knee injury on the first play following the two-minute warning. He was helped to the locker room by team trainers and did not return.
“It didn’t look good,” head coach Andy Reid said afterward, as the Chiefs turned their attention to the severity of their franchise quarterback’s injury.

Playoff Hopes Officially Extinguished
The loss officially eliminated Kansas City from playoff contention, marking the first time since 2014 — and only the second time during Reid’s tenure — that the Chiefs have failed to reach the postseason.
Los Angeles (10–4) also completed a season sweep of Kansas City (6–8) for the first time since 2013, back when the Chargers were still in San Diego.
Multiple red-zone turnovers proved fatal throughout the year, including interceptions at the goal line earlier this season against Philadelphia and Jacksonville — a recurring theme that ultimately defined the Chiefs’ disappointing campaign.
Gardner Minshew’s Late Chance Falls Short
After Mahomes’ injury, backup quarterback Gardner Minshew took over with Kansas City still threatening.
Minshew completed his first three passes for 22 yards, moving the Chiefs to the Chargers’ 34-yard line — within long field-goal range for Harrison Butker. But a delay-of-game penalty pushed the attempt back, and the drive ended when Minshew underthrew a pass intended for Travis Kelce, allowing safety Derwin James to intercept the ball and ice the game.
“I felt comfortable going in and executing,” Minshew said. “I hate that I couldn’t get us the win and keep our hopes alive.”
Mahomes’ Rushing Spark, Passing Struggles

Before his injury, Mahomes finished 16 of 28 for 189 yards, with no passing touchdowns and one interception. He did, however, account for Kansas City’s lone touchdown with a 12-yard scramble, capping an 11-play, 68-yard opening drive.
The score marked Mahomes’ fifth rushing touchdown of the season, a career high. He also set a new personal best in rushing yards this year, surpassing his previous mark from 2023.
Despite his mobility, Mahomes was sacked five times, the most he has taken in a game this season.
Defensive Highlights and Missed Opportunities
Kansas City briefly seized momentum in the first half when rookie defensive end Ashton Gillotte recorded his first career interception after pressure from Mike Edwards and Drue Tranquill forced an errant throw from Justin Herbert.
The takeaway set up a field goal, one of two converted by Butker, giving the Chiefs a 13–10 halftime lead.
But the Chargers responded late in the second quarter with a rapid touchdown drive, highlighted by a 16-yard score from rookie KeAndre Lambert-Smith — the first touchdown of his NFL career.
Los Angeles then “double-dipped,” opening the second half with another scoring drive. Kicker Cameron Dicker connected on field goals from 23 and 49 yards, with the latter standing as the game-winner.
Injury Concerns Mount
Kansas City’s injury list grew lengthy as the game progressed. Right tackle Jaylon Moore exited with a left knee injury and did not return, forcing the Chiefs to reshuffle their offensive line.
Several other key players — including Chris Jones, Nick Bolton, Jaylen Watson, Xavier Worthy, and Rashee Rice — left the game briefly but were able to return.
All eyes now remain on Mahomes as the Chiefs await further evaluation.
What’s Next
The Chiefs travel to Nashville next Sunday for a noon kickoff against the Tennessee Titans. However, with postseason hopes extinguished, Kansas City’s focus has already shifted to recovery, evaluation, and an uncertain offseason.
