🔴 UPDATE: New Details Emerge in Brown University Shooting Investigation
New details are emerging in the investigation into the deadly shooting at Brown University, as authorities continue an intensive manhunt for the suspect and officials reveal new information about the victims and the circumstances surrounding the attack.
One of the students killed in the shooting has now been identified as MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, a freshman pre-med student who was attending a voluntary study session at the time of the attack, according to friends and university officials.

Victim Was Not Enrolled in the Class
A close friend of Umurzokov told reporters that the student was not enrolled in the economics class where the shooting took place but had joined the study session simply to keep a friend company ahead of final exams.
The session was optional, Brown University Provost Francis Doyle confirmed, explaining that voluntary review sessions do not have attendance records, making it more difficult for investigators to determine exactly who was inside the classroom when the gunman opened fire.
“He just tagged along,” the friend said, adding that Umurzokov had even sent a lighthearted message shortly before the shooting, joking that he had been “dragged into” the session.

Manhunt Continues as Authorities Seek Person of Interest
Providence police say eyewitness descriptions from survivors match the appearance of a person of interest seen in surveillance footage released earlier this week. However, officials emphasized that they still do not know whether the individual is affiliated with Brown University.
Police Chief Oscar L. Perez Jr. said authorities will not stop searching until the suspect is captured, noting that the investigation remains active and complex.
“A person is going to get caught,” Perez said. “We’re not stopping until we do.”
Investigators have also asked the public for help identifying another individual who may have crossed paths with the person of interest on the day of the shooting. Police clarified that this person is not considered a suspect but may have information relevant to the case.
Weapon Details and Security Concerns

Authorities confirmed the weapon used in the attack was a 9mm firearm, the most commonly used caliber in violent crimes in the United States. Officials said multiple rounds were fired inside the classroom.
As scrutiny grows, questions have been raised about security inside the Barus & Holley building, an older structure on campus that students say lacks the access controls and camera coverage found in newer facilities.
Student leaders have called for expanded surveillance, while Brown University officials defended their campus safety systems, saying the school maintains more than 1,200 cameras but does not have coverage in every hallway or classroom.
Victims’ Conditions and Community Response

As of Wednesday, one additional victim was released from the hospital, while six others remain hospitalized. Officials said one victim is in critical but stable condition, and the others are stable.
Brown University has canceled final exams and lowered flags to half-staff in honor of the victims. The university is also hosting interfaith services and counseling sessions as students and faculty continue to grapple with the aftermath of the attack.
Investigation Ongoing
Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha said there is no evidence so far that the shooting was targeted at a specific individual. He stressed that while progress may appear slow, investigators are following leads and remain confident the case will be solved.
Authorities say additional updates are expected as surveillance footage, forensic evidence, and public tips continue to be reviewed.
