DC Guard Commander Calls Wounded Soldiers ‘Heroes’ After Shooting

November 27, 2025 · By sheploocloud@gmail.com · In U.S. News

In a message posted on X, Doane said the thoughts of the entire Task Force were with the wounded Guardsmen and their loved ones.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the National Guardsmen and National Guard families who are going into a Thanksgiving holiday with a burden that I wouldn’t wish on anyone,”
Doane wrote.

The two soldiers were deployed from West Virginia to assist with high-visibility security patrols in Washington, D.C., as part of an ongoing mission coordinated through the Joint Task Force.

Doane emphasized that the soldiers volunteered to serve away from home to ensure the safety of the nation’s capital, calling them “heroes.”

Swift Response Praised for Preventing Further Violence

Officials say other nearby Guard members acted immediately when the suspect opened fire, tackling and disarming him before additional shots could be fired.

Doane highlighted their composure under extreme stress:

“It takes extraordinary training and presence of mind to see two of your own shot and still subdue the suspect with no further incident.”

Law enforcement confirmed the alleged shooter was taken into custody at the scene and transported to a hospital for treatment. His identity has not yet been publicly released.

Authorities say the attack appeared targeted, though investigators have not determined a motive. The FBI continues to lead the investigation.

Security Operations to Continue Through Holiday Weekend

The Joint Task Force–DC is responsible for coordinating National Guard missions within the capital region, including crowd management, emergency support, and federal security assistance when requested.

Doane said the mission will continue without interruption and that additional support resources are being provided to Guard personnel across the city.

Local officials stressed that there is no indication of a broader threat, but enhanced patrols will remain in place through the Thanksgiving weekend as a precaution.

Hospital officials say the wounded soldiers remain in critical condition, and their names have not been released publicly.

Community Reaction and Support for the Guard

Residents in the surrounding area expressed shock after the shooting unfolded in broad daylight just blocks from major federal buildings. Several nearby businesses briefly closed while police secured the scene.

Local leaders urged calm and praised the National Guard’s response.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said the city is coordinating closely with federal agencies and confirmed that additional security measures will remain in place through the holiday weekend.

Community groups in both Washington, D.C., and West Virginia have already organized support efforts for the families of the wounded soldiers, including counseling services and emergency assistance teams.

Investigation Moving Forward as Families Await Updates

The FBI continues to process evidence, review surveillance footage, and interview witnesses. Federal officials say more details—including the suspect’s identity and possible motive—will be released once confirmed.

For now, authorities stress patience:

“Facts must guide this investigation—not speculation,”
a federal official told USANewsToday.

Military chaplains and medical liaisons are working with the soldiers’ families, who have requested privacy.

Hospital officials say both Guardsmen remain in critical but stable condition.

The Bottom Line

  • Two National Guard members were critically wounded near the White House
  • The suspected gunman was subdued at the scene and is in custody
  • Officials are praising the rapid response that prevented further violence
  • FBI and National Guard investigations are ongoing
  • Security operations in D.C. will continue through the holiday

The Joint Task Force says its mission remains unchanged—and that the focus now is on supporting the wounded soldiers and ensuring the safety of the nation’s capital.
