Elon Musk Becomes World’s First Person With a Net Worth of $677 Billion, Forbes Estimates
Elon Musk has become the first person in history to reach a net worth of $677 billion, according to calculations published by Forbes earlier this week.
The sharp increase in Musk’s wealth was driven primarily by recent secondary sales of SpaceX shares, in which employees and early investors sold portions of their holdings. Forbes used the pricing from those transactions to assign a significantly higher valuation to the privately held aerospace company, boosting the estimated value of Musk’s stake.
SpaceX Valuation Drives Surge in Wealth
Forbes now estimates SpaceX’s total valuation at approximately $800 billion, up from a previous estimate of around $400 billion. Musk owns roughly 40% of SpaceX, meaning the revised valuation had a substantial impact on his overall net worth.
Unlike Tesla, which is publicly traded, SpaceX is a private company, and its valuation is not determined by a daily market price. Instead, estimates are based on funding rounds, private share sales, and internal transactions, which can vary widely and may not reflect the company’s future public market value.
Tesla and SpaceX Remain Core of Musk’s Fortune
Musk’s wealth remains heavily concentrated in his ownership stakes in Tesla, the electric vehicle manufacturer, and SpaceX, the space exploration company.
While Tesla’s valuation fluctuates daily based on stock market performance, SpaceX’s valuation can shift dramatically when new share sale prices emerge, as seen in the recent transactions involving employees and investors.

Valuations May Continue to Evolve
Forbes cautioned that private-company valuations such as SpaceX’s are inherently fluid and can change significantly over time, depending on market conditions, investor demand, and future financing activity.
Still, the updated estimate places Musk firmly at the top of the global wealth rankings, extending his lead as the world’s richest individual and marking an unprecedented milestone in personal wealth.
