🏈 Who Is Sherrone Moore? Michigan Fires Head Coach After Investigating Inappropriate Relationship
The University of Michigan abruptly fired head football coach Sherrone Moore on Wednesday, ending his tenure effective immediately after an internal investigation concluded he engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.
The university said the violations were serious enough to dismiss him for cause, and longtime program figure Biff Poggi has been named interim head coach.
According to the Detroit Free Press, Poggi previously stepped in earlier this season during Moore’s university-imposed suspension for the Central Michigan and Nebraska games, stemming from Moore’s connection to the Connor Stalions sign-stealing scandal.
Police Detain Moore Hours After His Firing
Shortly after the firing became public, Moore, 39, was taken into custody in Saline, Michigan, ESPN reported.
He was later transferred to Pittsfield Township authorities for further investigation into possible charges. Police have not released additional details.
Moore has faced disciplinary issues before. In 2023, he served a one-game suspension for a recruiting violation, and he was already set to miss Michigan’s first game of the 2026 season due to extended penalties related to the sign-stealing case.
Michigan has not disclosed specifics about the inappropriate relationship. Moore’s bio notes he has been married to his wife, Kelli, since 2015, and they share three daughters.
Late Wednesday, Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel confirmed Moore’s immediate termination.
“Credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member,” Manuel said. “This conduct clearly violates University policy, and Michigan maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.”
Who Is Sherrone Moore?
Moore’s rise at Michigan was rapid and impressive.
After joining Jim Harbaugh’s staff in 2018, he coached tight ends, the offensive line, and eventually became offensive coordinator. His leadership helped Michigan secure multiple Big Ten titles and the 2023 national championship.
When Harbaugh left for the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers, Moore was promoted to head coach.
Over the 2024 and 2025 seasons, he compiled a 17–8 record, including a marquee win over archrival Ohio State.
Michigan finished the 2025 season 9–3 and is scheduled to face Texas (9–3) in the Citrus Bowl on December 31 in Orlando, Florida.
