A Storied Hollywood Career
Rob Reiner was one of the most influential figures in modern Hollywood, with a career spanning more than five decades. The son of legendary comedian Carl Reiner, who died in 2020, Reiner began his career as a comedy writer in the 1960s.
He worked as a writing partner to Steve Martin on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour before rising to fame as an actor in the 1970s. Reiner became a household name portraying Michael “Meathead” Stivic on the groundbreaking sitcom All in the Family, a role that earned him two Primetime Emmy Awards.
After the series ended in 1979, Reiner transitioned behind the camera, launching one of the most celebrated directing careers in film history.
Iconic Films and Directing Legacy
Reiner’s first major success as a director came with the cult-classic rock mockumentary “This Is Spinal Tap.” Over the following decade, he directed a string of iconic films, including:
- Stand By Me
- The Princess Bride
- When Harry Met Sally…
- Misery
- A Few Good Men
- The American President
- The Bucket List
While directing When Harry Met Sally…, Reiner met Michele Singer, a photographer. The two married in 1989, and Reiner later credited their relationship with influencing his decision to change the film’s ending so the lead characters ultimately end up together.
The couple remained married for more than 35 years.
Final Projects and Recent Roles
According to IMDb, Reiner had recently completed one final directorial project — a live concert film featuring the fictional band Spinal Tap, recorded at Stonehenge alongside major musical acts. The film is expected to be released next year.
Younger audiences may also recognize Reiner from his acting roles as Bob Day, Jess’ father on New Girl, and as businessman Albert Schnur in the fourth season of The Bear.
Family

Rob and Michele Singer Reiner had three children together — Jake, Nick, and Romy. Reiner also had a daughter, Tracy, from his first marriage to filmmaker Penny Marshall, who passed away in 2018.
As of now, authorities have not announced any arrests or officially confirmed the reported details. The case remains under active investigation.
