Xi Urges Trump to Handle Taiwan Carefully in High-Stakes Phone Call
Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday, urging Washington to approach the Taiwan issue cautiously as both sides attempt to preserve a fragile pause in trade tensions. China’s Foreign Ministry said the call also touched on Ukraine, but Taiwan dominated the discussion.
Xi said Taiwan’s return to China was “an integral part of the post-war international order,” referencing cooperation between both nations during World War II. He stressed that outside interference crosses a red line for Beijing.
Taiwan’s Prime Minister Cho Jung-tai rejected the remarks, saying the island is “fully sovereign” and that “reunification is not an option.”
Rising Regional Tensions as Japan Signals Possible Military Response
Tensions in East Asia have escalated following comments from Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who suggested Japan could intervene militarily if Taiwan were attacked. China and Japan have been locked in weeks of diplomatic friction over the island.
Although Washington does not support Taiwanese independence, the United States remains the island’s largest supplier of military equipment and training—something Beijing repeatedly condemns.
Trump later issued a brief statement praising the “very strong relationship” between the U.S. and China without mentioning Taiwan directly.
Trade Talks Regain Momentum After October Meeting
The call revisited trade discussions that resumed in October during the leaders’ first meeting since 2019. Both nations have spent years locked in a tariff dispute that disrupted global supply chains.
Under a preliminary deal reached last month:
- China suspended restrictions on rare-earth mineral exports
- The U.S. agreed to lower certain tariffs
- China will buy at least 12 million tons of U.S. soybeans this year
- Purchases will rise to 25 million tons in 2026
Xi urged Trump to maintain “positive momentum,” saying the talks “reset the trajectory” of bilateral relations.
Ukraine Conflict Also Featured in the Discussion
Trump has prioritized ending the war in Ukraine, promoting a plan critics say may favor Russia.
China maintains a publicly neutral stance and reiterated support for “all efforts that contribute to peace.”
According to Beijing, Xi expressed hope that all parties can reach a “fair, lasting, and binding” settlement.
